Tides Marine

    Rudder Port/Bearing Type K Rudder Port/Bearing Type K
   Product Overview
Tides Marine RPB TYPE-K units are used with certain flanged bronze ports having two mounting studs for the flax packing collar. They mount directly over the existing studs. They are available with and without a separate lower bearing insert. This insert installs from inside or outside the hull (depending on the application) and replaces the conventional marine bearing. TYPE-K units consist of a one piece UHMW plastic housing with a nitrile lip seal.

Like all Tides Marine Rudder Port/Bearings, they eliminate the problems of metal-on-metal abrasion, electrolysis and corrosion. They are 100% watertight, require no maintenance and eliminate vibration resulting in quieter, smoother performance.

   Product Installation

Before installing the rudder, insert the red seal protector into
the lip seal. When rudder is in place, remove it, invert and
replace on top of the unit to keep debris off the lip seal during use.

Installation

The following is a brief description of what is involved when replacing a conventional flax stuffing box and marine bearing with a TYPE-K unit. Complete installation instructions are included with each part and should be followed closely.
  1. Inspect the rudder stock in the area where the lip seal will rest. Confirm that there is clean, smooth stock available.
  2. Block up the rudder and disconnect the steering arm and rudder collar.
  3. Remove blocking and carefully lower the rudder so that the stock is free of the upper rudder bearing and there is sufficient clearance between the end of the stock and underside of shelf to add the TYPE-K unit.
  4. Remove the mounting nuts and the rudder port collar. Remove packing.
  5. Inspect the upper end of the stock and remove any burrs, nicks or sharp edges which might damage the lip seal during installation or use.
  6. Insert the red seal protector all the way into the lip seal to cover the thin sealing edge.
  7. Run a bead of marine sealant (such as Lifecaulk® or 3M® 101) on the underside of the flange for a watertight seal. Slide the unit onto the stock and carefully guide the end through the red seal protector.
  8. Slide the unit down the stock and over the threaded studs.
  9. Replace the mounting nuts and washers-snug.
  10. Jack rudder back into position (shaft passing through the upper rudder bearing). Block in place.
  11. Fully tighten the mounting nuts.
  12. Reconnect the steering arm and rudder collar.

   Before Ordering
Tides makes Type-K bearings per builders specifications. When placing an order, you need to specify the diameter of the rudder stock "A"(.000 in.), the distance between centers of the mounting studs"B", the stud size"C" and the I.D. of the rudder port into which the unit will be mounted "D". If replacing a marine bearing with an insert, provide diameter "E" and length "F". Some existing designs are referenced in the table below.
