Tides Marine RPB TYPE-J is a retrofit unit which is used with existing bronze port bearings. Consisting of a one-piece UHMW plastic housing with nitrile lip seal, they were developed to replace the conventional stuffing box used on rudder ports.
The TYPE-J unit is virtually friction free, non-corrosive and maintenance free. Performance improvements include quieter, easier and smoother steering.
Before installing the rudder, insert the red seal protector into the lip seal.
When rudder is in place, remove it, invert and replace on top of the unit
to keep debris off the lip seal during use.

The following is a brief description of what is involved when replacing a conventional flax stuffing box with a TYPE-J unit. Complete installation instructions are included with each part and should be followed closely.
- Inspect the rudder stock in the area where the Type-J lip seal will rest. Confirm that there is clean, smooth stock available.
- Block up the rudder and disconnect the steering arm and rudder collar.
- Remove blocking and carefully lower the rudder so that the stock is free of the upper rudder bearing and there is sufficient clearance between the end of the stock and underside of shelf to add the TYPE-J unit.
- Remove packing nut (and backing nut if present). To ensure proper thread size of TYPE-J unit, send backing nut to Tides when placing order. It will be returned with your unit. Remove flax packing material.
- Inspect the upper end of the stock and remove any burrs, nicks or sharp edges which might damage the lip seal during installation or use.
- Replace the backing nut and thread to bottom of barrel. Insert the red seal protector all the way into the TYPE-J lip seal covering the thin sealing edge.
- Coat the rudder port threads with thread sealant.
- Thread the unit onto the port and tighten with a strap wrench. Turn the backing nut up the port and lock against the TYPE-J unit.
- Carefully jack rudder back into position (stock passing through the red seal protector and upper rudder bearing). Block in place.
- Reconnect the steering arm and rudder collar.
