Tides Marine

    Rudder Port/Bearing Type B Rudder Port/Bearing Type B
   Product Overview
Tides Marine TYPE-B Rudder Ports are used primarily on fiberglass hulls which have an exterior recessed pocket / interior flat for a backing plate. An ABS-approved design, it offers a longer bearing surface-to-stock diameter ratio as compared to other units.

This unit is an excellent alternative/replacement to a cast bronze unit in that it is significantly lighter and eliminates the problems of metal-on-metal abrasion, electrolysis and, corrosion. The units consist of a single piece UHMW housing with a nitrile lip seal and come with a matched backing ring. The TYPE-B is 100% watertight, requires no maintenance and offers quieter, smoother performance.

   Product Installation

Before installing the rudder, insert the red seal protector into the lip seal.
When rudder is in place, remove it, invert and replace on top of the unit
to keep debris off the lip seal during use.

Installation

The following is a brief description of what is involved when installing the RPB Type-B. Complete installation instructions are included with each part and should be followed closely.
  1. Locate the correct position of the rudder stock on the exterior recessed pocket.
  2. Based on the diameter of the RPB's barrel, bore a hole through the pocket using the corresponding size hole saw.
  3. Insert the unit and, using the hole pattern in the flange as a template, drill thru holes for mounting.
  4. Remove the unit and prep the hole for installation by clearing any dust or chips which may have accumulated.
  5. Run a bead of marine sealant (such as Lifecaulk® or 3M® 101) around the flange at the base of the barrel.
  6. Insert the unit and align mounting holes.
  7. From the inside of the boat, place the backing ring over the protruding barrel and align mounting holes.
  8. Fasten using the appropriate size SS hex head bolts and flat washers.

   Before Ordering
To determine which part to order, measure the shaft size of the rudder stock "A" (.000 in.) and confirm that the external pocket will accept both the flange diameter "B" and the height, "C". Also confirm that there is adequate space on the inside of the hull for the backing ring diameter (same as "B") and the overall unit height "D".
