Rudder Port/Bearing Type A

Product Overview

Rudder Port/Bearing Type A

Tides Marine TYPE-A Rudder Ports are used primarily on new construction in vessels with wood or "cored" hulls. In each case, the builder should prepare a "pad" through which the Type A Bearing is inserted. The surface of the pad should be parallel to the waterline.

The design is ABS-Approved and offers a longer bearing-to-stock OD ratio than other conventional alternatives.

This Port/Bearing is an excellent alternative to a conventional cast bronze unit in that it is significantly smaller, lighter and quieter. Like all Tides Marine Rudder Ports, the TYPE-A is watertight, requires no periodic adjustment or maintenance, is inert to electrolysis and there is no metal-on-metal abrasion.

The units consist of a single piece UHMW housing with a nitrile lip seal. The barrel of the unit is encased in a stainless steel sleeve to provide additional strength and support to the bearing.

Product Installation

Installation

The following is a brief description of what is involved when installing the RPB TYPE- A. Complete installation instructions are included with each part and should be followed closely.

  1. Locate the correct position of the rudder stock on the built-up mounting pad.
  2. Based on the diameter of the RPB's barrel, bore a hole through the built-up section using the corresponding size hole saw.
  3. Insert the unit and, using the hole pattern in the flange as a template, drill the mounting holes.
  4. Remove the unit and prep the hole for installation- clearing any dust or chips which may have accumulated.
  5. If there are any voids or gaps between the Type-A barrel and wall of the tube, fill with epoxy making sure that all raw edges are sealed.
  6. Lay a bead of marine sealant (such as Lifecaulk® or 3M® 101) under the flange at the top of the barrel.
  7. Insert the unit into hole and fasten using the appropriate size SS hex head bolts or lag bolts and flat washers.

Before Ordering

Using a caliper or micrometer, find the exact diameter of your rudder stock "A" (.000 in.) Next confirm that there is sufficient material to drill the mounting holes and adequate space to accommodate both the flange diameter "C" and the flange height "D".
