First make sure your bilge pumps are working properly, because it is the prudent thing to do. Next thing you want to do is to clean the propeller shaft in front of the shaft seal. Have a diver go down and stuff the stern tube with rags to slow down the water flow. You may have to remove the propeller in order to slide the shaft back far enough. Break down the shaft coupler and slide the shaft back far enough to install a lip seal over the shaft with a seal protector in place. Remove the 5 screws from the face of the shaft seal and slide the cap back over the end of the shaft. Twist the Split Washer and remove from the propeller shaft or slide it off the end. Set this aside as it will be reused. Using a small flat blade screw driver, insert it into the screw driver recess in the shaft seal housing and pry the old seal out. Slide the OLD seal off of the end of the shaft and the slide the NEW lip seal with seal protector installed on to the shaft. Clean out the Lip Seal pocket area and then remove the seal protector and slide the new seal into the pocket area and press in place. Seat the split washer into the cap and slide the cap and washer back onto the shaft. Slide the cap in place, start all of the screws back into the shaft seal. Tighten each in a criss-cross pattern to a maximum of 27 INCH pounds. Reassemble the propeller shaft into the coupling, remove the rags from the stern tube and if applicable, replace the propeller.
