Article Title:What happens if I lose water flow to a Tides Shaft Seal.

If water flow is interrupted, the lip seal will gradually degrade against the shaft to the point where dripping will occur.  If the vessel operator discovers the problem during scheduled maintenance, it is possible to replace the worn lip seal with a new lip seal (contained in a spare seal carrier) and restore the unit to full function.  If the absence of water is not discovered before the Teflon bearing begins to "wear", operating tolerances will be lost and the old shaft seal will have to be replaced.

In the event that one engine has to be shut down, most twin-engine vessels can return to port on one functioning engine at "non-planning" speeds.  To prevent damage to the lip seal and bearing surface of the associated shaft seal, it is best to use a "shaft brake" to keep the propeller shaft on the "down" engine from turning while underway.

When the vessel is back at the dock, remove the shaft break.

Check the shaft seal associated with the "down" engine.  In most cases, the lip seal and bearing will remain functional. In some instances, the lip seal may have to be replaced.  If the bearing surface wears "out of tolerance", the shaft seal assembly will have to be replaced.
